-Placement-As a first gesture we decided to study the landscape and the strong architectural elements that are placed in it. We distinguished a very wild landscape, as an extrution on the island, at the top of which is placed a strong architecture of two structures that make up the castle. By studying the architectural elements, such as the walls surrounding the castle, the sharp edges that it consists of, the paths that connect it, but most importantly the old function of the castle, which used to be a prison, we decided to place the modern construction in the gap between the two buildings and specifically one side of it underground.-Architectural Synthesis-As a building composition and through the geometries that arise, we want the visitor to experience the strong reminder of the struggle, between light and dark, imprisonment and freedom. The aim of this project is to focus on the quality of living and the spatial experience of the design. That’s why the concrete building structure is slipping into the ground while its ends are thrown off and out of the walls trying to come out into the light, after the darkness, embracing the two buildings of the castle. Additionally, showing respect to existing structures of the castle, we place them lower.-Movement & Function-The proposed function of the building is this of a cultural center. The visitor, to enter the building reaches the intersection of the movements, through their path in the area, meaning the gap between the two constructions of the castle. From there he is driven through a long isolated walk with the sky as the only connection to the natural world. So guests are disconnected from the intimacy of the everyday environment and face the desperation of the prisoners, guided by a circular path inside the building through exhebition spaces and a library. The intent is not to repress but to help the understanding of what has happened in this area.-Materiality-Concerning the materiality of the intervention , exposed concrete is used and addotional black copper dress the box-shape spaces of the exhibition.
