Kipseli Square, Athens Greece

By decomposing the morphological elements of the Fokionos Negri sidewalk, three auxiliary elements emerge. The line, as a continuous flow of the sidewalk, gives the pedestrian the space to come into contact with traffic in the public space. The points, as stopping points along the sidewalk and the surfaces, with their matter dominating, such as green surfaces and water surfaces.

The intention of the proposal for the new square of Kypseli is to reproduce the above morphological elements. The concept of flow, the “line” continues to exist in the new configuration as it leaves the pedestrian free to wander between the functions of the square and also to cross it.

The element of the circle, which is strongly observed along the sidewalk, is reproduced in the uses of the public space of the square, taking part in its individual constructions and configurations.

More specifically, at the point of the first entrance to the metro station, the construction of an “amphitheatre” is proposed, which automatically transforms the purely entrance space into a stopping and meeting space, while also functioning as a canopy for the same entrance.

Similar constructions, in which the circular form prevails and function as stopping, meeting and resting points, can be seen along the length of the square, giving space to the greenery, and enclosing the station’s ventilation outlets.

Accordingly, the element of water wants to cover certain surfaces of the square with the aim of restoring the trace of the stream. A central parking space that follows the shape of the circle is thus proposed, which fills and empties with water, depending on the time of day, the actions that take part and the needs of the wider area. The water, in this case, reflects the character of the area, and the people it hosts. When the water shrinks the point turns into spaces of actions and interaction.
