The building volume of the museum is configured as a multi-prismatic solid with selected openings, a composition of volumes that scale and turn following the building line and in conversation with the neighboring buildings. The sculpting of the new geometry lends a musicality to the composition, while redefining the boundary with the streets of the settlement, creating new spatial qualities and perspectives. The alternation of perspective is also evident at all levels inside the museum, where the same design logic is followed.
The new building composition is structured in two sections, the basement and the superstructure. In particular, the museum’s permanent exhibition is placed in the basement, in order to be organized on a single level. Thus, it is possible to widen the future square in front of the museum to free up movement and organize community activities. For the lighting and ventilation of the permanent exhibition, two trapezoidal atriums with planting, visible from the level of the square, are formed. One is adjacent to the existing building, while the other is placed in the center of the composition and around it the exhibition units are structured.
In the area of the ground floor, the “commons” are placed in proximity to the square, in particular, the library, the periodical exhibition, the reception and the shop. Auxiliary uses are organized on the back side of the museum towards Thessaloniki Street and on all levels. Furthermore, the offices are located on the first floor, while on the second floor, the cafe, which opens onto a large terrace offering a view of the entire settlement.
Regarding the materials of the proposal, stone is chosen, and specifically, travertine for the paving of the square and for all the external surfaces of the museum, which will project as a continuation of the public space. The choice of material is a reference to the historical relationship of Ypsonas with the settlement of Lofou. The travertine refers to the local colors of the unpainted traditional stone structures of Lofou, while at the same time it gives timelessness to the whole composition.
