The Competition concerned the creation of a thermal center and cultural complex in the existing facilities of the Sarlitza Pallas hotel, as well as the remodeling of the existing natural landscape of the study area.
With respect to the preserved building and the ancient Roman baths of the plot, we tried to make the new intervention work as a background to the existing natural and built landscape, enhancing it visually.
Using the volume of water as a synthetic tool again, we placed it at the core of the heating center. Distinct cubic units are also developed here rhythmically in linear relation to this at different levels. All individual spaces refer visually and functionally to the water core.
The spatial proportions, the direction of the light, but also the visual relaxation in the archaeological findings have their reference to the Roman public baths.
More strongly in relation to the Bologna building, perhaps due to the confrontation with so many historical and social stratifications of the plot, we attempted in Sarlitza to highlight the public character of the complex. For us it was now obvious the role of the baths as a point of reference for the community and a connecting link between the various qualities gathered in this piece of land.
