Observatory Houses

The purpose of this competition was to create a living experience underneath the sky. Having in mind the surrounding area of the Roccascalegna castle and the creation of the observation houses, we decided to place the houses on the highest point of the site which is the castle itself which is suspended between earth and sky. Wanting the visitor to experience a primal living situation, underneath the sky, of the historical monument we placed the basic functions, meaning the houses and the observation at the castle, while the rest secondary more public functions where placed lower near the church, closer to nature. Regarding the form of the observatory houses the part which concerned us the most, was the façade towards the sky.

Due to this we designed our houses with openings on the roofs at specific parts of the houses, specifically at the there were the bedrooms were placed, in order for someone to observe with a clear eye the stars and sleep literally underneath them. Respecting the existing historical structure of the castle we “filled” the existing pars of the castle with new structures. These structures are made using lightweight oxidized metal which can allow a clear distinction of the new object from the existing structures and formed in a way that it will meet the requirements of the observa􀆟on as said above. Also, we supplemented some of the destroyed, by 􀆟me, parts of the castle with these new constructions.
